Using the Lexical Editor

Contributor

PATHS uses the Lexical rich text editor for all article content. Lexical provides a clean, distraction-free writing experience with powerful formatting tools and custom content blocks.

The Editor Toolbar

The toolbar appears at the top of the content editing area. It contains controls for text formatting, structure, and block insertion. Hover over any toolbar icon to see its label.

Text Formatting

  • Bold (Ctrl+B), Italic (Ctrl+I), Underline (Ctrl+U) — select text and apply
  • Strikethrough — apply from the toolbar
  • Inline Code — wrap technical terms in monospace formatting

Headings

Use H2 for main sections, H3 for subsections, and H4 for further subdivisions.

Do not use H1

The article title is automatically rendered as H1. Start your content with H2 to maintain proper heading hierarchy.

Use bulleted lists for unordered items, numbered lists for sequences, and checklists for actionable content. To insert a link, select text, click the link button, and enter the URL.

Descriptive link text

Use meaningful link text like "View the sleep hygiene study" instead of "Click here." This improves accessibility and comprehension.

Inserting Blocks

Beyond standard text formatting, the Lexical editor supports custom content blocks. Position your cursor where you want the block and use the Insert Block menu (the "+" button in the toolbar) to add:

Insert Block menu showing available block types: Video Embed, Quiz Question, Callout, Audio Embed, Image Gallery, PDF Viewer
  • Video Embed — embed YouTube or Vimeo videos
  • Quiz Question — add multiple-choice knowledge checks
  • Callout — highlight important information with styled boxes
  • Audio Embed — embed audio content
  • Image Gallery — display multiple images in a gallery layout
  • PDF Viewer — embed downloadable PDF documents

See Adding Media, Videos & Callouts for detailed instructions on each block type.

Writing Tips for Educational Content

Start with a brief introduction that tells the reader what they will learn.
Use H2 headings to divide the article into logical sections.
Keep paragraphs to 2-4 sentences. Dense walls of text reduce comprehension.
Include at least one interactive element (quiz, callout, or video) per major section.
End with a summary or key takeaways section to reinforce the main points.
